Small Business Spotlight: Vy Floral Design

Have you found your passion yet? What motivates you everyday to continue to deliver value to your customers? How the long hours you are working on your business can bring great rewards?

Become inspired and find out how our amazing partner Vy Nguyen found her passion on a break from nursing school and continues to do what she loves, creating stunning pieces that wows her customers.

How did you discover you had a passion making floral creations?

I started my career in nursing but during my nursing break. I thought it would be fun to sign up for a floral class and my passion started from one floral class to working at small boutique to gain more experience my interest and curiosity expand with creativity. And I love to be creative and make beautiful things for people.

Why did you decide to start your own business?

I started my business because I want to create my own floral team and to be my own boss. I want to show brides that when it comes to designing with flowers the possibilities are endless.

What are some of the challenges you faced when starting up?

Some challenges we faced focuses on one thing and that’s getting our name and our brand out there. Finding the right designer who has the same passion as I do to join the team is another one.

What do you find most rewarding about your career?

I loved when a bride walks in the reception hall or their ceremony says ‘wow this is so pretty, this is what I imagined’. That’s the most rewarding about being a florist! Making people happy and do what you love.

What lessons have you learned now that you are a successful designer?

Be confident in your decision and your design. And never stop learning from others.

What is the best thing about owning your own business?

The best thing about owning my own business deserves a two part answer. My team and I can create florals that are beautiful and consistently in line with our design values, yet bring our clients wishes and desires to life in such unique ways. Staying true to how we design, the values of our branding and seeing the joy of our clients makes it all worth it.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to be involved in the floral industry?

Learn everything from everyone. A floral trend is similar to a fashion trend. It’s always changing and there are many different ways of doing a certain thing. You don’t have to follow the traditional step. The more you learn the more you will find your own style.

For your potential clients, what is the process that you go through with them when you are designing unique pieces?

I try my best as the planner and as the main advocate for my clients, to be up front about costs when it comes to their floral desires. I ask questions like, 'What is it about this arrangement you love? The colors? The size? The texture? The greens? The shape?' 'What can we pull from this photo to not only make your flowers look the way you want but also fit within the budget.’ The idea is to put what they have in mind onto paper and then make that a reality.

What is your favorite type of flowers?

I don’t really have favorite flowers since I am lucky enough to work with lots of different variety of flowers every day.
